Great Migration wildebeest herd in the African savannah

The Great Migration Collection

The Great Migration Collection is a seasonally designed East African safari following more than a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Rather than promising a single moment, this journey places you in the strongest wildlife areas for your travel dates, with expert guides, carefully selected camps and enough time to experience the scale of the migration.

A Great Migration Safari Designed Around the Season

The herds move in response to rain and fresh grazing, so every month offers a different perspective. From the southern Serengeti calving grounds to the remote northern valleys and the grasslands of the Maasai Mara, we design your route around current seasonal patterns rather than a fixed itinerary.

River crossings are spectacular but unpredictable. Our approach gives you time to appreciate the entire ecosystem: newborn calves, territorial predators, vast moving herds, quieter wildlife moments and the changing landscapes that make this natural cycle possible.

Begin in the Serengeti

Your safari begins in the Serengeti region best suited to the season. Between roughly December and March, the southern plains become a nursery as wildebeest gather to calve. The abundance of vulnerable young animals attracts lions, cheetahs and hyenas, creating exceptional opportunities to observe predator-prey behaviour.

As conditions change, the migration moves through central and western areas before reaching the northern Serengeti. Mobile and permanent camps are selected for location, guiding standards, comfort and responsible operations, keeping you close to the wildlife while preserving an intimate wilderness atmosphere.

Explore the Northern Serengeti and Mara River

During the middle and later months of the year, the northern Serengeti becomes one of the most rewarding places to follow the herds. Game drives explore open plains, rocky kopjes and river valleys used by resident and migratory wildlife.

At the Mara River, patience is essential. Herds may gather for hours or turn away without crossing. Your private guide reads the animals’ movement and positions the vehicle respectfully, ensuring the experience remains unhurried and sensitive to the wildlife.

Continue into Kenya’s Maasai Mara

The journey continues into the Maasai Mara, where sweeping grasslands support outstanding resident wildlife throughout the year. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and large herds of plains game make every drive rewarding, whether or not the migration is crossing the reserve.

Depending on your preferences, accommodation may be inside the reserve for direct access to migration areas or in a private conservancy offering lower vehicle density, guided walks, night drives and meaningful community connections.

Luxury Camps, Private Guiding and Seamless Flights

Light-aircraft flights reduce long transfers and reveal the immensity of East Africa from above. On the ground, experienced guides interpret animal behaviour and adapt each day to wildlife movements. Private vehicles can be arranged for photographers, families and travellers who value complete flexibility.

Selected camps combine comfort with a genuine sense of place: spacious tents, warm personal service, memorable meals and front-row access to the wilderness. Each property is chosen to complement the season and your preferred travel style.

Plan Your Great Migration Journey

The Great Migration Collection can be tailored by date, duration, budget and interests. Add a hot-air balloon safari, a private photographic guide, extra nights in the Serengeti or Maasai Mara, or a relaxing Zanzibar beach extension.

Share your preferred travel window and Tano Bora Collection will recommend the strongest seasonal route, suitable camps and a personalised itinerary for an unforgettable Great Migration safari in Tanzania and Kenya.

The Itinerary

Your journey, day by day

01
Day Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where a Tano Bora Collection representative will welcome you and transfer you privately to a refined lodge in Arusha. Settle in, recover from your international journey and meet your safari specialist for a personal briefing on the seasonal route and wildlife conditions ahead.

02
Day Days 2-4

Serengeti Migration Country

Fly by light aircraft to the Serengeti region offering the strongest migration opportunities for your dates. Your camp may be positioned on the southern plains during calving season, in the central or western corridor as the herds move, or farther north during the river-crossing months. Spend three days on flexible game drives, following wildebeest and zebra while also searching for lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and abundant resident wildlife.

03
Day Days 5-7

Northern Serengeti and Mara River

Continue to the northern Serengeti, a beautiful landscape of open grassland, wooded valleys and rocky kopjes. During the appropriate season, your guide will monitor herd movements near the Mara River. Crossings cannot be scheduled or guaranteed, so patient, respectful observation is central to the experience. Away from the river, enjoy excellent predator viewing and quieter encounters across this remote region.

04
Day Day 8

Fly to the Maasai Mara

After a final Serengeti activity, travel into Kenya and continue by light aircraft to the Maasai Mara. Immigration and transfer arrangements are coordinated in advance. Meet your guide at the airstrip and enjoy game viewing en route to camp. The Mara's sweeping plains and river systems support remarkable wildlife throughout the year.

05
Day Days 9-10

Maasai Mara and Departure

Spend a final full day exploring the Maasai Mara, with the option of a sunrise balloon safari or a full-day drive with a picnic lunch. Search for migrating herds when present and enjoy the Mara's exceptional resident big cats and plains game. On Day 10, take a final morning activity before flying to Nairobi for your onward journey or a privately arranged extension.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for a Great Migration safari?

The migration is a year-round cycle. Calving is generally associated with the southern Serengeti early in the year, while northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara journeys are popular during the middle and later months. Rainfall varies, so we recommend the strongest route for your exact dates.

Are Mara River crossings guaranteed?

No. River crossings are natural and entirely unpredictable. Herds may gather, retreat or cross without warning. We select well-positioned camps and allow sufficient time, while ensuring the wider safari remains rewarding regardless of a crossing.

Is this a fixed itinerary?

No. The route, number of nights, camp style and activities can be tailored to your dates, budget and interests. Seasonal wildlife movement determines which Serengeti region we recommend.

Can the safari be private?

Yes. Private game-viewing vehicles, specialist photographic guides and exclusive-use accommodation can be arranged. Scheduled light-aircraft flights are normally shared unless a private charter is requested.

Is the Great Migration Collection suitable for families?

Yes. We can choose family-friendly camps, connecting rooms or private units and adapt daily activities to children's ages. Some camps and activities have minimum-age requirements.

Can I add Zanzibar or another extension?

Yes. Zanzibar, the Kenyan coast, gorilla trekking, Ngorongoro Crater and additional safari regions can be added to create a longer East African journey.

What luggage can I take on safari flights?

Light aircraft use strict weight limits and usually require soft-sided bags. Allowances vary by airline and route, and exact guidance will be supplied before travel.
