The Gorilla & Primates Discovery Collection is an immersive journey through Rwanda and Uganda’s forested highlands. Mountain gorilla trekking forms the emotional heart of the safari, complemented by chimpanzee tracking, rich birdlife, beautiful volcanic landscapes and meaningful insights into primate conservation.
An Extraordinary East African Primate Safari
Few wildlife experiences compare with meeting a habituated mountain gorilla family in its natural habitat. After hiking through dense forest with expert trackers, you may spend a carefully controlled hour observing social interactions, feeding, play and the quiet authority of a silverback.
This collection allows time to understand the wider ecosystem rather than rushing between treks. Experienced guides explain forest ecology, conservation challenges and the community partnerships that help protect endangered primates and their habitat.
Chimpanzees and Ancient Forests
The journey begins with Rwanda’s remarkable landscapes and a guided chimpanzee experience in a protected montane forest. Chimpanzees are active, vocal and constantly moving, making the trek energetic and exciting. Other primates, butterflies and colourful forest birds add depth to every walk.
Canopy viewpoints, tea-growing landscapes and time with skilled local guides reveal a greener, less familiar side of East Africa. Trek difficulty and daily pacing are considered carefully when selecting activities and accommodation.
Mountain Gorillas in the Virunga Highlands
Rwanda’s Volcanoes region rises through bamboo forest and mist beneath a chain of dramatic peaks. On trekking morning, park guides allocate a gorilla family according to fitness and current conditions before leading the group into the forest.
The encounter is intimate and strictly managed. Remaining calm and following ranger instructions protects both visitors and gorillas while allowing natural behaviour to unfold at close range.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Crossing into Uganda introduces the ancient slopes of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, one of Africa’s most biodiverse protected areas. A second gorilla trek offers a different forest, family group and tracking experience, making it especially valuable for committed wildlife travellers and photographers.
Between activities, enjoy forest views, warm lodge hospitality and optional community or nature walks. Your stay supports a tourism model connecting conservation with local livelihoods.
Comfort, Care and Expert Planning
Gorilla permits are limited and must be secured in advance. Tano Bora Collection coordinates permits, private transfers, border formalities and lodge arrangements, then tailors the pace to your fitness, interests and preferred comfort level.
Selected lodges combine character, attentive service and convenient access to trekking headquarters. Porters can be arranged to carry daypacks and provide valuable support on steep or muddy terrain.
Plan Your Gorilla and Primate Journey
The Gorilla & Primates Discovery Collection can be shortened, extended or combined with a classic savannah safari in Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda. Additional gorilla permits, golden monkey tracking, birding and cultural experiences can also be included.
Share your travel dates and interests with Tano Bora Collection, and we will design a responsible, deeply personal primate safari through the forests of Rwanda and Uganda.
